More TMJ Information
You may have found us researching TMJ, TMD, MPD or CPD. If you are feeling confused you are not alone. These terms, often used interchangeably, all refer to symptoms related to head and jaw pain and dysfunction. TMJ stands for the actual temporomandibular joint, the joint that connects your lower jaw to your skull and is not a medical condition. Temporomandibular disorder, Myofascial pain disorder or Cranio-facial pain disorder are all diagnoses appropriate for the collection of symptoms and diseases related to head and neck pain.

There are differing philosophies among health care professionals today concerning the appropriate methods for the diagnosis and treatment of TMD. TM Disorders are a multi-faceted and complex disease process, most often requiring a multi-faceted approach for complete and satisfactory resolution of the symptoms.

Many people seek treatment for their continued pain and dysfunction from a multitude of providers including Ear Nose and Throat specialists (ENT), ophthalmologists, neurologists, psychologists, physical therapists or chiropractors. Symptoms leading them on their search may include:

Frequent and/or persistent headaches that may start in front of the head, along the sides or in the upper part of the neck. The pain may range from mild to severe and radiate to other areas.

Additional Symptoms May Include:
  • Pain above or “behind” the eyes, blurred vision
  • Jaw pain, popping or clicking, facial pain and/or tightness
  • Jaw locking, restricted ability to open or close your mouth
  • A jaw that deflects to one side or the other upon opening
